A QUICK UPDATE FROM DOCTOR TOM - HEALTHY VS. UNHEALTHY FOODS

A QUICK UPDATE FROM DOCTOR TOM - HEALTHY VS. UNHEALTHY FOODS - As consumers, we are constantly inundated with marketing campaigns that make us think a product is 'Healthy', when actually it is not. Sometimes we even take a healthy product and make it unhealthy.

Fat-free salad dressings are a good example. Sure they're lower in calories, but often their ingredients actually prevent absorption of the vitamins and minerals present in the salad. You would be far better off by utilizing a healthy fat, like olive oil, than by going fat-free.

Speaking of olive oil, I hope you're not cooking with it. Just because olive oil is mainly a healthy monounsaturated fat does not mean that it is thermally stable. In fact, the only fats you should be cooking with are saturated fats. The best ones to cook with are coconut oil and various nut oils. If you cook with olive oil, you're just decomposing it to a mixture of carcinogens. You would be better off cooking with butter.

Sometimes we try to avoid emulsifiers and additives, so we buy a peanut butter's 'Natural' version. Make sure you read the label. Most of these peanut butters contain a saturated fat that causes artery inflammation, namely Palm Oil.

Finally, most everyone I meet thinks that 'Greek' yogurt is somehow good for you. Actually, Greek yogurt is just thick yogurt. Being Greek has nothing to do with the Pro-Biotic content in the yogurt. Again, read the ingredient label. The yogurt must list the Pro-Biotics on the ingredient list or you're just eating very expensive Sugar Milk.
