A QUICK UPDATE FROM DOCTOR TOM - Tips to keep your neural connections strong and your brain large as you age:

1. Keep your stress low by learning to breath correctly and relax. I now teach this in my office.

2. Keep your triglyceride levels low to protect your brain from cardiovascular damage

3. Stay away from trans fats, i.e. hydrogenated oils, which are found in processed foods and store bought baked goods. Trans fats actually reduce brain mass.

4. Take your omega-3 fatty acids each day. They increase neural connections and protect against age-related brain shrinkage. You can also eat salmon, ocean trout, and walnuts for omega-3 fatty acids. In fact, studies have shown that omega-3 fatty acids work just as well or better than most anti-anxiety or depression medications.
