A QUICK UPDATE FROM DOCTOR TOM -
I'm often asked in the office about the quality of Fish Oil Supplements. Here is the complete, and unfortunately complex, answer.

Most of the fish oil supplements on the market are concentrates of two forms of omega-3 fatty acids: EPA and DHA. If the concentrate is an ethyl ester (EE) form of EPA or DHA, it's actually resynthesized fish oil and should be avoided. Resynthesized ethyl ester fish oil contains a form of DHA that keeps natural DHA in your body from doing its job on both a molecular and cellular level. In addition, ethyl ester concentrates only have about 50 percent of the bioavailability of the natural omega-3s that come directly from fish. It has to do with chiral centers in molecules.

I recommend you always read product labels, but as for fish oil supplements, make sure you don't see the words 'ethyl ester' or 'EE'. You want the product that is a triglyceride or 'TG'. Even better, get your EPA and DHA from the source where fish get it from, Algae. You can buy microalgae or algal oil supplements, or just eat salmon and ocean trout.
