The necessity and safety of taking aspirin to lower heart attack risk.

FROM DOCTOR TOM - ASPIRIN USE - I'm often asked about the necessity and safety of taking aspirin as a 'daily supplement' to interfere with the blood's clotting mechanism. First, you have to realize that aspirin is an acidic medicine that causes side effects. Its real name is acetylsalicylic acid. A recent study of 100,000 participants from the U.S., Europe, and Japan concluded that the risks of daily aspirin intake actually outweighed the heart attack prevention benefits. Aspirin users without a history of heart problems were 10% less likely to have a 'heart event', yet 30% more likely to have gastrointestinal bleeding. However, regular aspirin use can also be lifesaving for those with existing heart problems, since it lowers the risk of a second heart event by 20-30%.

What if you want to take aspirin to lower your heart attack risk, but are allergic to it? No problem, just take some of the safer substances that lower heart attack risk, like the omega-3 fatty acid DHA found in fish oil, Lycopene found in cooked tomatoes, Lutein found in pistachios, or Vitamin D-3 which you synthesize after being in the sun. You can also drink two cups of coffee or consume small amounts of Ethyl Alcohol (booze). Finally, just eat brightly colored fruits and vegetables every day.
